@shardinhand To each is their own. In my personal opinion ( many others share this opinion as well.) The film was a massive let down, being way too over the top thrusting us in a universe that wasn't even a thing in Pitch Black. Fans like myself under stood that Chronicles should have been i the same tone of the first film but Hollyweird likes to do its own thing instead of listening to what fans want to see. Pitch Black was a low key indie horror film that came out of nowhere with a world that was believable unlike Chronicles of Riddick. This film was so an absolute train wreck and because of it the 3rd film in the trilogy Riddick went back to basics as it should have been all along. This film tried to be Dune, Fire Fly , Star Wars and Pitch Black and failed miserably. I mean if you like it then fine I respect your opinion I but for me I think its trash. Now while most fans typically hate Alien 3 I tend to like it not because of the story but of the sentimental value of the film due to a family issue. So everyone has their opinions of what they like and dislike I guess... but most fans of the series hate this film accept you XD
This movie is like most sequels. Just like the matrix 2. Total bullshit. Brainless story and some brainless action. But hey. Its Superdiesel. Like all his movies. His one against all. No sense at all.
There are plenty of bad movies that I can't sit through. The Chronicles of Riddick isn't one of them. While I don't think anyone disputes it's flaws, that doesn't mean it lacks entertainment value. I can't tell you where the line is, but it's there. Sometimes movies can be bad, but fun to watch.
Maybe it's Karl Urban (apologies I had to check his name) and his situation / character arc that subtly carries it. You expect the power struggle but not the dealing with the nagging wife, a great nuance and quite out of place but it works.
It was intended to be at least two movies and then the studio forced them to hack and slash the screenplays . It's still better than the trash they make now. They did worse things to The Dark Tower.
This guy doesn't understand the splendor of The Chronicles of Riddick. Obviously the Lord Marshal wants to dominate the universe and is hanging underverse like fake rabbit in front of greyhounds. This review makes little to no sense. It's a nonstop refusal of suspending an ounce of disbelief.
Sometime in like 2015-16 I read an article that said at the time Vin was one of the top ten actors guaranteed to return a profit. There ya go do with it what you will. ✌🏽
This is one of those movies that makes me wonder how conditioned the modern audience is to ignore gaping plot holes, unbelievably convenient coincidences, monosyllabic heroes, one dimensional villains and action sequences cranked up to 11 and jump cut to incomprehension by the human mind. Maybe COVID will kill these monstrosities.
You make reference to the chances/possibility of the earlier bounty hunter coming to capture riddick on this other planet. Hmm, guess just ignore the scene of him mentioning how he a tracker for his ship that riddick stole. Which I'll bet riddick knew so they would come and if needed a new shop he could steal theirs or get caught. Also saying how lucky how they take him to the jail he needed to go to. Well riddick did talk to them and lead them that way, on the idea that it's the best prison that will pay the most that thier ship could reach. Those were quick off my head and I haven't seen it in years, how the f do you miss them? Plenty to criticize in the film, but doesn't change what it is. A badass anti-hero with a random as hell lore and no goal besides to survive. Also "escape from butcher bay" game was amazing.
Necromongers rule is you keep what you kill. That's why he becomes the next lord marshal thingy when he kills him. Also this movie was made in 2004. What are you on about him being old and getting out of F&tF persona? :v This movie was made 5 years BEFORE F&TF. This is video has the most misinformation till now in your career I guess.
Thank you drinker! Ha ha ha. This is one of your best. It was great for my abs. They're still soar from laughing so hard! Thank you for recycling these shitty movies and tv shows for their humorous value. You're just as good as MST 3000 and it doesn't take 2 hours. Looking forward to your next production.
The third movie is where really it all falls apart. TCOR was decent overall IMO except for a couple things: Furians or whatever, and the Necros. The Necros were simply just weird at times. I think their concept was rushed and a weird enemy was created. There wasn't enough understanding of what makes a Necro, and what their ultimate goal was actually for. How about, sacrifice enough people or find that one soul that could lead to the underverse. Had Riddick not been some weird other race that was bound to fight the Necros, I would have liked it better. Riddick should have been the anti-hero in Chronicles as well out of just his pure nature instead of some prophecy. He should have saved the galaxy not because of prophecy, but because he had to due to some other mitigating circumstances. I liked that Riddick was a pure badass, but I wanted him to be more of an Act of God badass rather than one crafted by the phrase, "It was prophesied..."
Hey ! I'm completely sure about being subscribed to your channel, because of the Alien covenant video. So just for you to notice that YT is fucking with you.
I love your videos Drinker and agree with 99% of your hates/recommends. But this one I disagree with you. Yes it's the weakest of the 3 Riddick movies but I like it because it gives background to the world of Riddick. You have played down the character of Riddick and ignored who he is and what Furrions are. And alot of the coincidences you mention are not really coincidences. On Creamatoriom, the Necromongers were looking for Riddick and the bounty hunters were looking Riddick. The movie has its flaws but it's not a bad movie.
An unexpected sequel that in my opinion was awesome lol. Loved every minute of it and I can't see what your referring to as retconning of the first film?...
I think the critical drinker is awesome. But on this one I'm at odds with his review. I really enjoy Chronicles of Riddick. Hard to explain why??? But I keep going back to it.
When you had a long day and dealt with a lot of stress you need a movie like this. It’s ridiculous but not preachy. It hits the spot just right. I loved it.
Movie was great. No, Kira did not get thrown in prison to get eyes like Riddick. Is this another movie you were too drunk to pay attention to? I love that it was very operatic, with even a Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in it. It also wasn't a carbon-copy of the first movie. And it's hilarious that CD complains about Vin Diesel's acting when he all but falls over himself praising the first movie Predator. A movie filled with beefy bodies TRYING to act. LOL
This movie is a great combination of action movie bullshit and the kinda worldbuilding and detail that only die-hard needs could come up with. Also the special features have a mode that, during the movie, give little snippets of worldbuilding info on the setting, characters and story. It's amazingly in-depth.
Loved Pitch Black. Vin Diesel was amazing as Riddick in it, ok other characters. Did not know there would be a sequel, but i've enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick to, for the dumb thing it is. Didn't know about Vin Diesel before Pitch Black, and knew very little about Karl Urban before Chronicles of Riddick, but both actors i've enjoyed during the years (for different reasons). And about Karl Urban, want another Dredd movie, NOW!
Not gonna lie, I'm surprised The Critical Drinker didn't like this movie. I definitely thought this would fall under the same category of "Sense? No. Badass? *Sits tea cup on corner* Ask me again." fucking love this movie, perhaps the critical drinker wasn't drunk enough for this, to bad. :P
Really?! You're fuckin' trashin' Riddick movies? You've gone fucking mad, CD. Go pick on real lame shit and leave us to love some rare originality and creativity where those kinds of things hardly exist anymore.
There are a couple explanations for some of your points They didn’t exactly retcon Riddick’s backstory they just shoehorned the whole Furyian thing into his backstory which is still kind of shit. He still grew up an orphan and was found in a liquor store trash bin. In the games it’s shown that his eyes aren’t actually from a surgery but some kind of ability that manifested later in his life which is also a lot more boring than paying a doctor in cigarettes to see in the dark. Also on the necromongers I think the main reason they take over other planets is because they aren’t allowed to reproduce, so in order to keep up with their numbers and what not they take over planets and add those people to their ranks. The lord marshal forgetting where the underverse is is probably the canon explanation not gonna lie lol.
This movie was outstanding, and it always just made sense. The movie never making sense is something I've never thought about. Everyone acted their part phenomenally. The costumes and attire were dead spot on. In fact, I think of this movie almost every time a new "space" movie comes out so I have something to compare it to. Nobody since Vin Diesel as Riddick has nailed the "I don't give a shit but deep down I really care, either way I'll kill your ass" attitude. He didn't act good? This was one of Vin Diesel's best, natural characters ever. U shaddup.
Me likes the Critical drinker, but me thinks he was a bit too much of a critical thinker on this one..in fact i find him dead wrong. Yep, its not Pitch Black, and I am happy it is not. It was a lovely sequel and expansion of the Riddick universe. Back when it was all released, i could not wait for more. I am happy to see so much positivity towards the movie in this comment section.
This movie was stupid as all hell, full of plot holes and inconsistencies. I still like it though. Let’s just enjoy it for what it is. Sometimes things don’t have to make sense to be watchable. It made me forget about my regular life and made me want to be a super/antihero for a few hours so it served its purpose.
I loved this movie. Sure, it's an overblown space fantasy. But the characters are great and very individual, not cookie-cutter. Also, there's a nice Macbeth subplot.
Hey Matey....Don't overanalyse. This is a glorious space opera. Escapism pure and simple. Scotland film industry could never even dare hope to match the production quality of Blakes 7 or even Crossroads . It ties up ok for me except vision augmentation would be sooo more advanced then. Just enjoy the escapism. Plus the sequel 2 Riddick is absolutely brilliant and my fav. sci fi movie. Vin Diesel is charismatic and cool even in talk shows. Just get used to it.
I'm glad to see the commenters are standing up for this movie. Was it the best Sci Fi ever made? No, probably not. Is it damn fun to watch? Absolutely yes.
Chief you really need to look up lore of this franchise, especially the knife. In case anyone is wondering the knife is a relic from the war on furya that can only be removed by a actual furyan.
