I just don't understand why they want us to relate to the villain. No matter what they did in the past, the fact of the matter is, she wanted to skin 101 Dalmatians because obviously she's incapable of coming to terms with the possibility, that she doesn't need to use real animals and use faux instead. Why would we want to relate to someone who wants to butcher a lot of dogs?

But Drinker, you direct yet sophisticated movie connoiseur. Is it not possible that the reception of these new movies are expected, maybe even inteded by disney? These new movies are basically remakes of remakes, and the originals are solidified classics. There is no chance, they can live up to their predecessors, telling stories already told, or filling in plotholes. Disney must be aware of it, too. After all, these originals have a place in our heart, and of course, we feel compelled tho watch them again, if we are reminded of them, especially if we are left unfulfilled, by a less remarkable remake for example. However, while classics, these originals are old by now, with old formats that are hardly viewable nowadays. Unless we buy it again or stream it in the current format, provided by Disney. Especially during this calamitiy, caused by a certain virus of unspecified origin. For instance the views of the original Mulan and Star Wars raised past the remakes' premiers. With these remakes, Disney gets to appeal to present ideals, trends and values, while It can experiment with creating new contet using relatively small creative and writing input, and even if the film flops, They can cash in a f***ton of money from the income of the remake and newly purchased originals. Yes it's way more complicated than advertising the classics, but it can be profitable and less shameless. I'm not tryin to undermine the people working hard on these films, and there are even chance upon reusing elements and retelling stories, but not directly using the source materials. Maybe I am simply wrong in the matter, and in reflection of the morality of these actions, I certainly hope so. Dear Drinker Almighty, You once asked whether Disney has its creativity and imagination run dry that they are failing to come up with any original tale to tell, but to unnecessarily retell perfect old tales in way that no one is interested. I would like to point out that Disney's successes had rarely been for being original. The classics are old tales masterfully adapted to motion pictures, many other titles are from acquisitions of other cinematic production companies. It is natural that all this remakes would happen as a company famous for not being original tries to reinvent itself for the 21st century. Any business that has been innovative and creative will not need to reinvent itself because it would have been constantly doing so. I would have consistently pumping out success after success that are current, and simultaneously timeless, masterpieces. I feel that the downfall of Disney nowadays is trying to be creative. If the company focuses on telling epic fairy tales, folk legends and mythologies of the past with emphasis on human virtues, love and compassion, without political agenda, which is what Disney had alway been doing until recent past, they will actually continue to succeed in this day and age. Somehow I feel like the story of the Cruella movie isn't going to be half as good as the twisted little version in Once Upon A Time. I also can't really imagine anyone but Victoria Smurfit pulling that act off now, either.

I literally cannot understand how you can turn Cruella into an antihero. Maleficent i guess was ok because they had room to explore with magic and such. But truly how can you justify skinning puppies? Are they gonna reveal that dogs are evil? Lmao
I kind of wish copyright on various properties would expire after 40 or 50 years. Then these studios would have to make new things and couldn’t always rely on making bank on old intellectual property.

Instead of an aging boxer, imho Disney is more like Valentino Rossi, for all the same reasons you use the aging boxer, but the difference being - we're all clinging to the hope that the hero we grew up with will rise to glory again as opposed to dwindling into being an also ran. Disney sees an anarchist movie like Joker and thinks it's popular because of what's seen at face value. Same goes for Harley Quinn. Used to be DC would rip off other things like Marvel for ideas but failed miserably. These Hollywood studios think they know what works when in fact they're just copying the answers of the smart kid sitting next to them without explaining how they solved the problem.
Huh, you actually brought up DC movies as positive examples. Look what you did. But seriously, even if they wanted to do this, why _Cruella_ of all villains? Seriously, why? Even the idea of a Disney villain prequel itself isn’t _bad_, dare I say. Though it would need a more mature tone. Like yeah, it might be interring seeing how Jafaar backstabbed and politicked his way up to be the Shah’s advisor, or Ursula coming across dark magic and the various twisted ways she used to to make people’s lives miserable before being banished from the kingdom. But Cruella? Even Maleficent made more sense. Even by Disney villain standards Cruella is on the far end of the POS spectrum. It’s literally in her name. Like... U wot m8?
There are some live action remakes that I like a lot, and I can also appreciate showing films from the villains perspective. HOWEVER, Cruella is a complete sociopath who wanted to skin puppies for fashion. So, no?
The Live Action Maleficent Movie was at least Interesting, taking a story we've seen a Million times (Almost Literally) and just changing it up. Sure it wasn't really for kids since she got Roofied by her lover and Mutilated so he could become king. But how do you take a woman that wants to skin dogs and turn her into some plucky Anti-hero.
The only media that Disney has yet to conquer is porn. Just think what their CGI and special effects people could accomplish there with their low brow production tech!
I doubt Cruelly is gonna be the 'misunderstood'. She's gonna end up wearing the dogs of her rival. End of movie. They didn't make her tragic in once upon a time and they are probably not gonna do it now. She was born evil.

Disney is doing this horseshit to keep their copyrights fresh, so all their precious classics don't fall into public domain and lose their profits. That's the primary objective. The wokeism mixes more shit into the mess too though.
